I watched Pokemon: The First Movie a couple of days ago, because of this review. And how incredibly accurate you were (like you always are). You pretty much nailed it, especially that hypocritical ending. I'm thankful I wasn't into Pokemon when I was younger and I actually was in the target demographic at the height of its popularity.

I used to like Pokemon when I was a kid. (I was 10. I didn't know better.) But when I rewatched Pokemon: The First Movie the other day, I realized that all the things were said, every single thing, was right. The kids have no personality at all. It really got boring after a while. Not to mention how confusing it was. I don't remember the show at all. But all in all, I was disappointed that all my childhood memories were wrong. Now, I'm thinking that EVERYTHING I KNOW IS A LIE!!! Were all the shows I watched when I was a kid this bad? I hope not. Anyway, nice video, man. This was the first Nostalgia Critic video I ever saw, and it will always be my favorite. Keep on keepin' on, NC.

Very, very funny.

And yes it is full of cliches and It's really dumb, but they had to make it just as dumb as the show, they had to respect the (horrible) original idea.

Good job, maistro.

Thanks for making the sacrifice to review this, Critic. You remember it so we don't have to, and I'm pretty sure a lot of us would rather not remember this.

It's very cathartic to see you deconstruct and mock such a formerly-cherished part of my childhood. Thanks a lot.

My friends found out that I hadn't seen this last year when we were hanging out. So they dragged out a VCR and put it in. I thought I was going to be blown away, but I was just bored throughout the whole thing. I was the only non nerd in the room and picked up on the Minnesota Vikings joke and I left the room. So retarded.

Brilliant work on Pokemon, NC. That was some much needed justice to what was actually a horrible film that left my interest in Pokemon in tatters.

However, I have to respond to your comment about Mew. I think that his flippant and childishly playful behavior was actually intended to showcase him as the "Prankster" character, akin to many legends of the past. However, Mewtwo's assault prompted a character transformation, as if to say, "Well, he's cute and isn't as dark and demented as his clone, but can still kick plenty of ass!"

Also...I never realized just how cruel that "bringing your friends back from the dead" concept was. Jesus...

Oh, and one more thing, and I'll shut up: Why is it that Japanese children's shows have to have EVERY character in the shot say something, no matter how pointless it is to the overall dialog? Is it that hard to have just one character stare in complete shock?

I LOVE this review, I would end up watching this damn show every morning at 6am when I was a teacher. Nothing like killing brain cells before teaching art to little kids!

I showed this to my friend and her two young sons, both Pokemon fans (of course) came running over and they thought it was hysterical, especially where you mock the big fight at the end. Though I don't think they found it funny for the same reasons we did...

I was about 15 when Pokemon came out. I actually did try to make an effort to check it out, but it never maintained my interest. One thing that puzzles me, though... What was the point of resurrecting Ash if the timeline was going to be reset anyway? Wouldn't Ash's death actually been a sort of justification to resetting the timeline if it meant preventing his death? It still would have been lame, but just saying. I preferred Care Bears 2's variation on the Tinkerbell resurrection. Also, love the Lion King bit. "It's just creepy."

I used to love Pokemon as a kid and saw that movie the first day it was on in theaters. (I was about 3 at the time and was easily amused) Now I noticed how stupid i was back then. I can't believe i got caught in the hype. Parents and teachers were annoyed by it too! In elementary there we "no pokemon allowed" rules.

This is one of many successful yet stupid anime shows out there. the only one that can be made an exception is dragon ball z. Every guy my age watched that show when they were younger.

The second movie was better anyway.

I agree with you; the moral makes no sense at all. And it was lame to kill off Ash only to bring him back a few moments later. It makes it entire pointless.

Sadly, I did a bit of research on Pokemon after watching this. The stories for the Japanese and American releases of this movie are different. In America, Mewtwo is pissed because he's a clone. In Japan, he's just pissed that he was made by humans and not God.

...Which I'll admit, is kinda understandable. I mean, I personally don't believe in God or anything, but if I found out that I was created in a lab, I'd want to throw a temper tantrum, too.

I find it amazing that Pokemon movies were being shown in Japanese theaters as recently as the sixth movie (there are eight, with about eleventy bajillion more in the works). I never was a fan and I don't own any of the games, but I still think it's fascinating how easily Japan can fuck with the minds of impressionable Americans.

Then again, they ARE three years ahead of us; they know every move we're going to make...

You make some good points...but at the same time, it kinda seems like you're trying too hard to find fault in the movie. Example: I don't believe for a second you had a hard time finding this movie, because as you said yourself, it's LITERALLY called the first movie. Anyone with access to imdb.com can find out the first movie is, in fact, the FIRST movie. Conversely, you have a good point about there being so many versions of the film, that seems excessive on their part.

Secondly, when this movie came out, it was common sense that no one besides fans of the show were going to go see it. Of course, parents had to take kids, but to every one parent, there was two or three kids going. It's a known fact: Kids movies sell big, whether they're good or not. Kids scream and cry to go see the movie, and the adults eventually cave and take them. Backstory was the least of Nintendo's problems, they didn't give a damn about newcomers. They didn't need any: They already had 3/4 of the kid population playing the games, and that's who they were aiming for. Seems smart to me.

On the other hand, pretty much every thing else you said was spot-on. I was a stupid little kid back then, who wanted to belive that Pokemon were real, and even I was pissed about Mewtwo erasing their memory. Nintendo did the impossible: They took money out of our (parent's) wallets while literally doing NOTHING to effect the overall storyline of the show.

Seriously, this is probably my favorite review, everything else besides what I said in my last post was perfect. The narrator is unknown, Mewtwo killing everyone in a kids movie, the main character's personalities, the crappy dialogue, Mew having the IQ of Tardy the Turtle, Ash's resurrection, the Vikings, you nailed it. Well done sir.

But really? In all seriousness? The Digimon movie makes the Pokemon movie look Oscar-worthy.

My only comment is that the name "Pokemon" sounds better than Pocket Monster. It's probably for the ease of small children to remember, but there's also "Digimon" which stands for Digital Monsters o_o
So yeah.. I think the producers made these names because it sounds better smilies/smiley.gif

I used to love Pokemon until the age of 13, after then, I found the plot boring and cliché as hell. Now they just add new Pokemons to keep the company going. I remember Pokemon was a huge hit when it was released in Europe

Ash loves his Pikachu so much that I think they're romantically involved off camera. Nice touch on mentioning that somehow all Pokemon understand each other even though they only repeat their own names. That always did drive me nuts. Halarious

Loved the Jamacian joke.

I got into Pokemon (the game) because my brother pestered me to no end, he had red, and wanted me to get blue. I was on a family trip, at the time, read all the Star Wars books I brought along, and was bored.

But hey, I'll admit, the whole concept interested me, was like a more advanced Tamagotchi (review THAT trend Nostalgic Critic!!!) And then I watched the show, and you know what? It was entertaining, I'll gladdly admit that.

Of course I now know that 4Kids is the root of all evil and wonder what the original anime or manga was like, but not currious enough to research it.

The one thing that never made sense to me was why Ash never banged Misty.

I gotta say, all these comments that say that this review ruined the movie for them are kinda funny. This review looks at the movie from a completely alien standpoint. Glasses Guy wasn't in on the whole Pokemon thing, so no wonder he thinks it sucks. If I wasn't in on it, I would most definately think it sucks. However, since I grew up with all this, I can't honestly think it sucks. From all filmic and cinematic standpoints, it's a horrible movie, but still, I grew up with this. I can't say it sucks.

Alexjr1543: The Pokemon fight scenes are seriously incredibly cartoony. Naruto and Dragonball Z have INSANELY dark fight scenes. I loved this movie when it came out but I guess that was because I was a kid who understood it. Great review

i actually saw this piece of crap when i was like 6, back during the 20 minutes when i actually liked this kind of crap. your review was great, and very accurate, but you should have included the scene when ash gets his ass kicked by mewtwo, when he actually tries to punch it, despite mewtwo being a phsycic death monster of death that can cause death.

Reviewing the Review.
written by doctorjackal777 , July 03, 2008
Forgive me for reviewing your review, but there's something I just gotta say. Pokemon isn't meant to make sense, and as you pointed out in the closing moments neither are the other cartoons we love so dearly. I loled at your review and realised that some stuff in that movie was pretty cheesy, and yes there isn't a deep and detailed plot or an explanation about what Pokemon are or where the show is set etc. But I think that's the point. For all the people who played the first set of games knew that Mewtwo was the final capture and Mew, to my knowledge was the extra Pokemon we'd never seen or heard of before. 150 Pokemon was the max at the time and having 151, was a big deal. At least for the innocent minds of children anyway. Children get bored easily anyone knows that so to spend the first half of the movie explaining the plot would turn kids off real quick. Also about the violence and fighting, Pokemon aren't meant to beat eachother to the point of death, that fact is in the games, tv show and of course the movie. Pokemon 'faint' when they lose, not 'die', which removes the killing other people factor which would make the show violent. The vikings are stupid I'll give you that but then Team Rocket is the comic relief eliment of the show and are regularly doing stupid things, although at the beginning of the series they were actually serious and dangerous, what happened to that? I find that one of the big things you did about this movie and all of the kids movies is that the plot is usually poor and the emphasis is on the special effects. Well yeah, most kida would rather watch something explode and see Pikachu shocking someone that have a deep and meningful plot to follow. That goes for the majority of kids movies. It's gotta be simple to understand but doesn't need all that much logic behind it. But I'll admit Pokemon the first movie, is confusing if you hadn't either played the game or seen the cartoon series, but I figure their demographic was kids who already knew about it. Overall it did make me, laugh which is I'm sure your intention but seriously it just made me wanna go watch it again. I like Pokemon, have for the longest time and I have seasons 1 through 5 in box sets. Sad I know but it's one of those shows you can watch without having to think much about it. And that my friend is why those shows are so popular. When your parents come in an ask you why Meowth can talk, or why The TMNT were raised by a rat, the answer always is 'it just is'.

What was 4Kids thinking?! Minnesota is the homeplace for vikings?! 4Kids is 4Krap! Glad now that the Pokemon Company took charge for later episodes.

To doc jackal a couple of posts above. If you ask a kid what they think of this movie, you will get something like "Pkmn is teh best, i luv pknmz!!11". But the idea, is to look back at these things we loved as children and see just how stupid, crap or just plain fucked up they really are. So it really is irrelevent if it's not supposed to make sense. And in this case, it really is a perfect example of a totally stupid and fucked up film. I loved this film as a kid, but watching it now and understanding that this film just contradicted the entire point of what pokemon is all about, it leaves you with no arguement to fight in its corner.

On the topic of pokemon fainting rather than dying. Obviously, the show is for kids so it makes sense. Plus the games would be kinda shit if your pokes died after losing a battle. It'd be like, "oh crap, gotta train another pikachu to level 50 now, what a bitch". But you can't use the fact that pokemon don't die as a result of battling as grounds for saying the show isn't violent. Of course, it's a cartoon and no-one takes it seriously (the thought is just lol) but your point did make me laugh when i thought of how many times ive seen team rocket burned to a crisp or had several thousand volts of electricity shot through them

Ah yes, Pokemon. I'm glad that I didn't see movie but I watched lot of series that is actually anime that was changed for kids in US before sendig else were. In fact its orginal audience in Japan was teens, not kids but after first season even they started to make it more towards kids.

I just want to clarify, as a child fan of this show, that the movies were Always weird as hell, and didn't ever fit into the show at all.
Also- the games were, and still are, awesome.
And no, the show wouldn't do anything that stupid. It was on a straight storyline, and didn't bring anyone back from the dead.
Case and point- Transformers and TMNT did bring people back from the dead.

Swedish Vikings? Holy crap, how did I forget this?
written by Shining Aquas , July 08, 2008
I remember being into Pokemon, and liking it to a great deal. I was pretty much done with the series around Ruby/Sapphire.
At this point, looking back at the series, the movies, and all the shorts, I realize that this series is not that great anymore. But, I can also see and still remember why it became so popular, and it's that feeling that keeps me coming back to the games. Ah the games, the classic Catch-Em-All gameplay was actually very very good. Even today, I think that Pokemon is still got solid gameplay, but the series is going way to far now with the number of Pokemon out, and the sheer stupidity that is today's kid's show.

Great games (Minus anything that didn't actually have to do with catching and training Pokemon), mediocre show, not so good movies.
