avatar .. was it exported to Europe as Hokuto no Ken ? I remember the game Black Belt,
I was one of the 5% of the American video game market that actually owned a Sega
Master System, and I had a copy of it.

I ask this because of 2 facts :

a)
back in the late 80s, Sega was the dominant console producer in Europe, beating
Nintendo.
b) Anime has been commercially popular in Europe longer than in
America, which leads to my second question:

Was Hokuto no Ken comercially
published, in any form, anywhere in Europe in the 80s ? Like while it was still
running in Japan ? We here in America never saw any commercial releases of
Hokuto no Ken until the 90s when it was called "Fist of the North Star"
and was released direct to video in specialty stores (video stores, comic stores
etc..). I know Europe and South America got a lot of Anime and Manga titles
commercially published before their publication here in the US (like dragon
ball).

just wondering

avatar Oh god I thought this vid was good, but when I saw the 80s flashback you killed
me!!! LOL loe it!
I drink ur piss ben! (eww gross lol)
S_Pac_3:16  - There was a Genesis/Mega Drive Hokuto no Ken game.   |2008-12-13 14:19:39
avatar that was ported to the US that was also altered and became known as "Last
battle". Lame...
minionsengage   |2008-12-13 15:18:18
This was by far the greatest GYMDK episode ;D
Maverick21   |2008-12-13 15:48:29
avatar great review, i have one thing though, the credits said the song at the end was
something other then take on me by ah ha unless i read the credits wrong or
missed something i think you may have given the wrong song credit.
AceBlack   |2008-12-13 16:07:56
avatar Haha! I totally dig the Ah-has and Take on Me. That was great. Talk about a
quintessential 80's band.

That was a great GYMDK Benzaie, and a good game
choice too. I played Black Belt a long time ago, and I never knew it was just a
sprite copy and paste of Fist of the North Star. You learn new things every day.
Thanks for the bad port, US localization team.

People exploding after one hit,
big bads dying via finishing moves that mirror the manga and show... that's how
you make a game based on a series. Not like that NES ghostbusters crap. Drive to
the store, buy my stuff, drive to the house, then maybe, MAYBE I get to bust
ghosts. Bustin' did NOT make me feel good then. It made me feel like I had some
kind of gaming cancer.

Since this segment wasn't present in this GYMDK, I'll
pay it respect here.
Two Words: Thiswasagreat Benzaiereview.

maiyeng   |2008-12-13 18:28:08
avatar Leather jackets were pretty in for the 80's.
Ah~, Hokuto No Ken. A franchise my
brother loves. I wonder if anyone has tried their hands on "Punch Mania:
Hokuto no Ken" in the arcades?
CultconXIX   |2008-12-13 18:43:30
avatar Hokuto No Ken.

If you know what that is, you don't need
any more word.
It's that awesome.
Shinigami   |2008-12-13 19:03:16

Well the game unfortunately came out as BLACK BELT in Europe...same as Last
Battle (which really is the sequel of this master system game)

The Anime came out in the early/mid 80's in France as " Ken le
Survivant" (that's what you can read in the review a lot) meaning "Ken
the Survivor", the french version had goofy voices and edited violent
scenes, to make up for the extreme violence of the original anime.

So yeah, KEN
was quite popular in France, it came out around the same as dragon ball in here
(so like 10 years before the US)...so that was plain stupid to release the BLACK
BELT game whereas it would have sold more if it was just KEN...same in Italy,
where Ken is EXTREMELY Popular...

dakostro  - Oh, Benzaie...   |2008-12-13 20:21:14
avatar You didn't happen to run into Chris Griffin while you were in that A-Ha video,
did you?

I remember renting a video with that animé as a kid. Boy, did it
depress me. Not because it was bad, but simply because I was a narrow-minded
brat who lacked understanding for Eastern storytelling.
Hawkins  - Hawsome   |2008-12-13 20:46:42
avatar Benzaie, your vids keep getting better and better! Keep it up, they're awesome!
Talden   |2008-12-13 20:48:09
Oh, so the name of the bear plushie is Barry? Nice to meet him!

I remember
"Ken le survivant" from the "Club Dorothée" when I was young...
Even edited, the show remains violent, like, over-the-top. That's what give the
mangas/anime a bad reputation, as if it was only made of violence and gore, and
leads to the editing of Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya. Yeah, the eighties were fun
times in television...
But the voice dubbing was hilarious, still not as goofy
as the voices from Nicky Larson (City Hunter), but hilarious aniway!

Good
review overall.

A bientôt.
Guitarhero1000   |2008-12-13 21:29:35
avatar I love that fucking song at the end. I don't know why... I just like it. Ah
well. Good review. :-*
Coldguy  - It needs more Aha   |2008-12-13 21:35:45
avatar Aha's high pitch voices rocked the 80s!
Lim-Dul  - Awesome!   |2008-12-13 22:34:00
avatar Again the mixture of fast pacing and exaggerated excitement alternating with
deadpan jokes just works!
Also, the audio in the clip is much better than in the
clips some people complained about in the past. If somebody doesn't understand
you NOW, Benzaie, tell him/her to take some English lessons. :-P
Dukect   |2008-12-13 22:36:04
avatar Great Ep Benzaie keep up the great work

GAME NEEDS MORE EXPOSURE!
gozzilynn  - Love it!   |2008-12-14 01:54:58
avatar I love Fist on the North Star. Read the manga. And watched the movie 1000 times.
Had no idea that there was a good game for it. Anything for Ninja Scroll?
